Hello, welcome to Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic Uyo, your home of Academic Excellence and a Centre for Skills development and Certification. We are a technology cutting edge institution, digitally accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to offer courses at the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels. Our students participate in mandatory Students Industrial Work Schemes (SIWES) and our graduates proceed on National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) at completion of HND program.

Our slogan is "One Polytechnic, Two Qualifications", which implies that it is mandatory for all students to acquire both entrepreneurial skills and Industrial skills and be awarded National and International Vocational Certificates along with ND or HND Qualifications.

Location Information

Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic Uyo is located in the heart of the city along IBB Avenue, Atan Offot, Uyo in the Oil rich capital City of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

The institution shares neighborhood with the State Government Secretariat complex on the left, the State E-Library Complex on the right, Nigerian Immigration Service and Nigerian Correctional Service offices at the rears while Banking layout, The Tropicana, a world class entertainment and shopping Centre, God'swill Akpabio International Stadium, International Conference and International Worship Centre are at close proximity to the institution. There's a strong presence of both Federal and State Security agencies in the area.

BRIEF HISTORY

ESTABLISHED TO RESOLVE CRISES IN THE OIL AND GAS PRODUCING COMMUNITIES

Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic, Uyo, was founded in 2001 as College of Petroleum Technology by an Employee of ExxonMobil (Dr. Engr. Victor EU Williams)

The purpose was to make skills and technological education accessible and affordable to the people of the oil producing areas whose original sources of economics livelihood have been impacted negatively due to exploration activities of the Petroleum Industry which had resulted in oil pollution in the land, waters and air.

It was an intentional effort to attempt to mitigate the negative consequences of oil exploration and provide alternate means of livelihood for the people in line with the presence of the highly scientific and technical Petroleum industry. To achieve this noble objectives, we needed to invest in Human Capital Development program that will close Skill gaps and give the people access to employment.

THE PROBLEM WE ARE SOLVING

Our aim was to take the youths out of the street, give them relevant skills and technological education, give them employment and get them to participate in the economic activities in the oil & gas and Maritime sector. Our mandate was to build a reservoir of highly skilled and competent manpower for global employment and economic development. Getting everyone to work with their hands, earn a living and pay tax just as the rest of us do.

COLLEGE UPGRADED TO POLYTECHNIC

In 2016 the College was upgraded to a full fledged Polytechnic with a new name Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic, Uyo. The decision was to give the institution a broader spectrum of operations into other sectors of economic potentials in Akwa Ibom State. The Polytechnic is accredited by NBTE to offer courses at National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programs.

The Polytechnic is in Partnership with renowned institutions like City and Guilds of London Institute, Petex of the University of Texas USA, Southern Albarta Institute of Technology, Canada for knowledge exchange.

Milestone Achievements

In January 2023, the Petroleum and Maritime Training Centre was completed and Commissioned
In June 2023, during its second matriculation the Hon Commissioner for Education Mrs Idongesit Etiebet on behalf of the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom state Commissioned the multimillion fully automated Petroleum Lab for PetroSkill Training
In 2024, the NBTE South South Director Dr Cyril Mbong Commissioned the first ever Compressed Natural Gas Training Centre
In August 2024, the institution Commissioned Petroleum and Maritime Training Centre in Eket on it's mission to make PetroSkill training accessible and affordable for the people of the oil rich communities in Akwa Ibom state
The institution has also established a global hospitality management training Centre in Eket with City and Guilds of London Qualifications
The institution has awarded scholarships to 366 beneficiaries under it's scholarship scheme
IMP Medical centre was Commissioned.
